Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are back - this time to try and catch the Ripper.

Only a few short years ago the monster known as Jack the Ripper held the East End of London in a grip of terror.

Now there are rumours that the Ripper has returned.

Three respectable young women have been slaughtered in Mayfair, the city's most respectable and exclusive district.

But instead of consulting Sherlock Holmes, the official police prefer to seek advice from Dr. Karl Schermann.

And while the flamboyant German enjoys official approval and public acclaim, Holmes sits at home, brooding.

But when another woman is murdered, Holmes decides to take matters into his own hands.

Before Holmes can bring the Mayfair murderer to justice, however, he must uncover the truth about Dr. Karl Schermann…

Can Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr Watson unmask the killer?

Or will the Ripper once again slip away into obscurity…?

Sherlock Holmes and the Mayfair Murders edition by David Britland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I like this one quite a bit. It's been some years after the Ripper murders, and there are a series of murders in Mayfair that have the police on edge. To make matters worse, because of a previous case, Scotland Yard is wary of working again with Sherlock Holmes. So he's not the first crime solver they bring in.

I thought the author did a good job of showing a restless, frustrated Sherlock who longs to be called into solve a difficult case but who knows he's not really welcome at this point. Watson is also well done, concerned with Sherlock's feelings about being left out of the investigation, he urges a holiday on Holmes where they find a mystery to take his friend's mind off the larger one. But the Mayfair case is clearly always at the back of their minds.

When he finally gets involved, it's a good story as well. I found all the stories entertaining, and to me the read very much like something Doyle would have written.

Sherlock Holmes and the Mayfair Murders edition by David Britland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The book is written closely following Conan Doyle's style. If you are a Holmes aficionado, a pleasant and passable mystery for a rainy afternoon or sunny veranda.
Almost as exciting A.C.Doyle. Just as enjoyable. What pleased was that Sherlock was kind to and thoughtful of Dr. Watson.
The various crimes that they solved were plausible.
An excellent page turner. Sherlock Holmes solves several mysteries along with the mass murderer. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style that features great descriptions that makes the reader be thoroughly engaged.
Enjoy! You will not want to put it down.
In this world of political Mayham I found Sherlock Holmes to be a great and welcome distraction. Though not written by Conan Doyle, it had all the flavor of vintage Sherlock. It actually seemed a collection of short stories as Holmes darts off to solve a number of mysteries before dealing with the primary crime.
As one who has read all of the original Homes stories and many other follow-ups, I can sincerely recommend this book. Mr. Britland, the author, tells a tale very reminiscent of the style of Conon-Doyle. New characters are introduced, old characters resurrected and good story resolved. Nick the Moose
If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were to suddenly be resurrected he would no doubt be amazed at how many books have been written that would fit into his collection seamlessly. Plenty of them I'd guess he'd have difficulties remembering if he had written them or not. This particular book belongs in that category. The author does a marvelous job taking the reader not only into the physical realms of London with the appalling horrors that existed amid the crime, squalor and hopelessness but does an excellent job letting reader see the realities through the eyes of the participants so we not only see but feel their fears and frustrations while trying to survive in brutal situations.

I like the leisurely pace of this book and although it didn't constitute a pulse-pounding roller coaster ride it kept you glued to the narrative. Even the part where Holmes and Watson take a break from the situations at hand, what occurred was really neatly done. One realm that will set this book above others of the same genre is that it easily has one of the best endings you will ever find. You will have to get the book and read it completely to see what I'm talking about but once you did that, I'd wager you (figuratively, of course because I know people all over the world read these reviews) lunch at your choice of eating places that my words are right on the money.

Also, I'll note that from here out when I see a Sherlock Holmes story with David Britland as author, It will be pre-ordered immediately. He, along with Hugh Ashton and others are in that select category.
I have read so many Sherlock Holmes pastiches that I only give 5 stars to the top books. This is definitely a step above most of the Sherlock Holmes stories out there. The writer has a good writing style and has a good grip of Victorian London and the attitudes and happenings of the day. The story is different and fully developed. For many Holmes pastiches I may enjoy the story but feel cheated at the end. So many writers do not know how to wrap up a story so the reader feels satisfied at the conclusion. I enjoyed the story from beginning to end. You won't be disappointed.
